GhostFingers is built to read surf forecasts. It is not built to read you. This page explains what the app does and does not do with your information.
What stays on your phone
Everything you create in GhostFingers — favorited spots, custom spots you add, sessions you log, rating-tuner adjustments, your display name — lives only on the device you entered it on. There is no account. There is no cloud sync. There is no backup to our servers, because we do not have servers for your data.
What we never collect
- We do not track your usage, taps, or screen views.
- We do not run analytics or crash reporters.
- We do not include third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your information, because we do not have your information.
What the app does request from you
Location, when you tap "Use my current location." When you create a custom spot and tap that button, GhostFingers asks iOS for your latitude and longitude one time so it can fill the coordinate fields. The reading is used immediately and not stored anywhere off-device. You can decline the prompt, and the app continues to work — you would just enter coordinates manually or drop a pin on the map. You can revoke the permission any time in iOS Settings.
Notifications, when you opt in. If you allow notifications, GhostFingers schedules local-only push alerts on your device when one of your favorite spots crosses into Cooking or ITS ON! No notification content is sent through Apple's servers; the alerts are scheduled locally with iOS and fire from your phone.
What the app fetches from the internet
To produce a forecast, the app makes anonymous public-data requests to:
- NOAA National Data Buoy Center (buoy observations)
- NOAA CO-OPS (tide predictions)
- Open-Meteo (wind and swell models)
- CDIP UCSD (nearshore wave models)
These are public weather and ocean data sources. Each request includes a User-Agent string identifying the app. None of these requests include your name, email, IP-derived identity, or any personal information. Your IP address is visible to those services for the duration of the request, the same way it would be when you visit any website.
Children
GhostFingers does not knowingly collect any information from children, because it does not knowingly collect any information from anyone.
Changes to this page
If our practices change, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. Because there is no account and no contact form, the way to learn about changes is to revisit this page.
